Pharmacologic category
Nonsteroidal Anti – inflammatory Drug ( NSAID ) .
Mechanism of action
Piroxicam inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by decreasing the activity of enzyme cyclooxygenase , which results in decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors from arachidonic acid .
Indications
Piroxicam topical gel is used for tendinitis , post – operation or post – trauma edema , and relief of local pain and inflammation .
Side/Adverse effects
Pruritus ; Rash ; Hives ; Photosensitivity ; Burning feeling of skin ; Dryness , scaliness , or peeling of skin ; Contact dermatitis or hypersensitivity .
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to piroxicam , any component of the formulation , aspirin or other NSAIDs .
Warnings / Precautions
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes . Safety and efficacy in
children < 12 years of age have not been established .
Pregnancy
Exposure late in pregnancy may lead to premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and may inhibit uterine contraction . Therefore , it is not recommended to use systemic forms of piroxicam in 3rd trimester of pregnancy . Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed .
Breast–Feeding
Piroxicam enters breast milk / use with caution.
Drug Interactions
Concurrent use of these medications with topical piroxicam may cause a cumulative irritant effect , resulting in excessive irritation of the skin : Abrasive or medicated soaps or cleaners ; Acne preparations or preparations containing a peeling agent , such as resorcinol , salicylic acid , sulfure ; Topical alcohol – containing preparations such as after – shave lotions , astringents , perfumed toiletries , shaving creams or lotions ; Cosmetics or soaps with a strong drying effect ; Isotretinoin ; Medicated cosmetics or cover – ups .
Administration and dosage
Usual adult , adolescent and children (12 years of age and over):
It is applied to the affected site 3 to 4 times daily . Treatment should be reviewed after 14 days or after 28 days if used for osteoarthritis .
How Supplied
- Topical Gel 0.5% , 60 g tubes.
Storage
Protect topical gel from freezing .
